When you do that, you create a character your readers will take an interest in, even if they wouldn’t want to share a cubicle with that person in real life. They may not choose growth, but you still want your readers to see that the opportunity is there. Put together, these characteristics make your protagonist a complex being with the capacity for desire, fear, pain, and growth.
